Discover which social media channel (i.e. Facebook, Twitter) is driving the most visitors to your website. You can do this by creating Advanced Segments in Google Analytics which is very easy to do but will provide you with the numbers to guide your social media strategy.
Step 1: Login to your Google Analytics and click on Advanced Segment under the Standard Reporting tab.
Step 1: Login to your Google Analytics and click on Advanced Segment under the Standard Reporting tab.
Step 2: Select “New Segment” and name it “Social Media” or whatever you wish. Just note we’re trying to track traffic from social sources here.
Step 3: Select “Source” as your dimension/metric. You can just type source on the box to save time from scrolling
Step 4: Identify sources. This is the part where you type social media related domains so that traffic from URLs containing these domains are tracked. Here’s my example, note that I included t.co (all links on Twitter are now wrapped with t.co url shortener).

If you are the organized type then you can also create separate advanced segments for Twitter and Facebook.
Step 5: Finally, to view analytics on your custom segment – Go to Overview, Advanced Segments, and put a tick on Social Media (or whatever name you gave your advanced segment). Click on Apply and you’re now presented with really intelligent data from Google Analytics.
